… Rachel Lacey

1. What’s the time of the day when you feel most like yourself?

Late at night after everyone else in my house has gone to bed (wait, is that weird?) I’m a night owl, so I love puttering around at night, reading, watching TV, etc. I do some of my best writing then too.

2. What’s your coffee order?

Tea or hot chocolate. Would you believe I’ve never drank a cup of coffee in my life?

3. What two totally normal everyday things become weird if you do them back to back?

Writing a sexy scene for a book and then hanging out with my 13 year old?!?! (yes, this has happened, and yes, it took a mental reset in between haha)

4. What do you think of garden gnomes?

I think I’m not as clever as some of your previous interviewees on this one, but garden gnomes kind of remind me of those Travelocity commercials now?

5. What business would you start if you had the necessary financial capital?

Honestly? My ultimate dream was to be an author, so I guess I’m doing it! The only other thing I might want to do if I had the money is start my own animal rescue.

6. What makes you smile?

Lily Seabrooke’s tweets, cute animal photos, when good things happen to good people, and any time anyone says something nice about one of my books (I don’t read reviews, so it always makes my day when someone reaches out!)

7. Do you believe in soulmates?

Absolutely! I think that sometimes, there really is that one perfect person out there for someone, but often, we probably have multiple people who can be our soulmates, because otherwise, too few of us would ever actually meet them. The world is big!

8. What author would you follow till the ends of every literary genre they chose to write in?

Alyssa Cole. I’ve read her historical romance, contemporary romance, thriller, sci-fi, m/f and and f/f pairings, and I’m probably forgetting some! If she writes it, I will read it.

9. What makes you cry?

Oh God, more like…what doesn’t?! Sentimental commercials, books, movies, those videos from The Dodo about animal rescue. Happy tears, sappy tears, sad tears, all the tears…

10. What personality trait gets you most often in trouble?

The tendency to second guess myself about literally everything (even the answers to these questions lol.)

11.  If you were a fictional character, who would you be and why?

Reed Smith from The Fall, because I’d get to kiss Stella Gibson. Oh, and I’d get in the elevator with her too. Croydon, what?! (if you know, you know lol)

12. What was the best gift you’ve ever given anyone?

Gosh, I don’t know! Am I a terrible gift giver?!

13. In a crowded room, what makes you notice a woman?

Her attitude. How is she interacting with the people around her? Does she seem confident? Kind? Funny? Approachable?

14. What’s your one big regret?

I’ve worked really hard to let go of the big ones, so I’ll just say – I regret that it took me until this year to be able to read and write at the same time. And by that, I mean that I used to only read for fun when I was between writing projects, which lately is almost never, so I didn’t get much reading time. I would be either 100% possessed with what I was writing or what I was reading. But this year I have finally reached the point where I can achieve my daily writing goal and then spend the rest of the evening reading for fun. And I’ve read SO MANY BOOKS as a result. It’s amazing!

15. What would be the title of your autobiography?

Long Story Short, because 1) I love song titles as book titles, 2) I love Taylor Swift, and 3) I hate writing about myself so I’d try to keep it short.

16. Three women you’d have over for dinner and what would you serve?

If I could make it four women, I’d invite my plotting group: Annie Rains, April Hunt, Tif Marcelo, and Jeanette Escudero. I love those ladies so much, we’ve chatted daily for almost ten years, and it’s been entirely too long since we’ve seen each other in person due to the pandemic! Oh, and I’d probably order takeout.

17. If you could have free, unlimited service for five years from an extremely good cook, chauffeur, rr masseuse, which would you choose?

Oh, a cook, hands down! I hate cooking, so I tend to fall back on the same recipes until I get so bored with them. And I know I need to eat healthier, which would be so much easier if I had someone to make me healthy, well-balanced meals every day. That would be the dream!

18. What’s in your fridge right now?

Leftovers! Related to my previous answer, I try to cook meals that leave us with leftovers so I don’t have to cook the next day haha. There’s also sparkling water, a good amount of produce, cheese, coconut milk, and probably my son’s tea (he makes it hot and then chills it to make his own iced tea, but he always forgets it’s in there.)

19. If you could choose one song to be played every time you enter a room, what song would that be and why?

I read this question out loud to my son, and he said, “well, that would depend on the room.” – ha. I don’t have a witty response to this, but Aerosmith’s Walk this Way sounds kind of fun.

20. Funniest/best/saddest/proudest (choose one) thing that ever happened to you as a lesfic author?

Honestly, every time someone messages me to tell me they loved one of my books, it feels like the best moment! Sometimes writing can be a lonely process, and it really means so much to know that someone out there enjoyed something that I wrote.
